How to protect your skin from the negative effects of the environment?
Modern life is closely linked to the negative impact of the environment: - psycho-emotional stress, - harmful eating habits, - poor environmental conditions. A large number of tasks and time constraints require replacing nutritious meals with "snacks" containing harmful food additives. Furthermore, we live in conditions of urbanization and the increasing production of harmful smoke and dust in cities. All these factors contribute to the formation of excessive free radicals, damage to cellular structures, and premature aging. Free Radicals and the Antioxidant System: Basic Information Free radicals are atoms or molecules whose outer shell contains an unpaired electron. This makes the structure of free radicals unstable, significantly increasing their reactivity. During the biochemical processes of the human body, a certain number of free radicals are constantly being generated. By reacting with cell membranes, free radicals disrupt their structure by activating lipid peroxidation processes. To protect against the harmful effects of free radicals, every cell is equipped with molecules that are linked together in what is known as an antioxidant system. By reacting with and neutralizing free radicals, antioxidants prevent lipid peroxidation, thus protecting the structure of cell membranes. Biologically Active Substances: Molecules Protecting Against Free Radicals To neutralize free radicals and prevent lipid peroxidation, the presence of sufficient amounts of biologically active substances, including antioxidants, in the body is crucial. Therefore, consuming dietary supplements and using cosmetic products containing these substances contributes to the rapid recovery of essential nutrients in the body. Fucoxanthin is a powerful antioxidant derived from brown, diatom, and golden algae. Fucoxanthin helps stabilize the structure of cell DNA and optimize the activity of the repair system, thus protecting cellular structures at the epigenetic level. Fucoxanthin is directly involved in neutralizing free radicals and epigenetically stimulates the body's own antioxidant system, preventing lipid peroxidation. Grape seed extract has long been known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. It helps stabilize the structure of connective tissue and prevents the breakdown of elastin and collagen. Vitamin E (tocopherol) is fat-soluble. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, it protects other vitamins (e.g., vitamin A). It protects the body against free radicals, strengthens the walls and permeability of blood vessels, causing them to dilate and dissolve clots. By reducing coagulation, it is used as an anti-atherosclerotic agent and promotes healthy pregnancy. In conjunction with selenium, it delays the aging process of cells, strengthening connective tissue. In food, it is found in: whole-grain bread, sprouts and cereal grains, vegetable oils (soybean, sunflower), soybean and sunflower seeds, vegetable fats, and egg yolks. It is also used in sports medicine in the form of nutritional supplements. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a compound whose properties are used not only in medicine. Vitamin C has also found applications in cosmetics. However, for years, it has been known primarily for its immune support. Few people know that ascorbic acid is an effective antioxidant that prevents aging (including skin aging), improves circulatory system function, and has anti-cancer properties.
